Sean Gaffney has always been a storyteller. His mother once made the accusation that while some people kiss the Blarney story, Sean took a bite from it. As a kid, he was the entertainment for his sister, Patty, whenever they walked somewhere – and they walked everywhere. Sean had to tell a story, sing a song, make up a poem, what-have-you; and if his sister didn’t like it, she would just reach out and turn the invisible radio dial to a new station, and Sean would have to launch into another story/song/what-have-you.

So, it came as a surprise to no one when Sean announced that he was switching his college major to theatre. Except for Sean, who had fooled himself into thinking he would have a life of stability and normalcy. Sean started in the management side of the business, learned producing, then gave in and became a playwright. From there, there was no looking back.

Sean Gaffney has authored thirty produced plays, three feature films, four commissioned television pilots, two published chapter books, as well as over two hundred produced videos, animation projects, YouTube series episodes and short films (including for Big Idea and SuperBook).

Other publications include contributing to Bigger on the Inside: Christianity and Doctor Who, It Was Good: Performing Arts to the Glory of God, and The Routledge Handbook of the Bible and Film. His book on the craft and theology of scriptwriting (a summary of all he knows) is about to be released — Meta Story: What Marvel & the Messiah Can Teach Us About Great Storytelling.

On the business side, he was the Story Administrator for Warner Bros. Features, editor of Drama Ministry Magazine, the Managing Director of Taproot Theatre (Seattle) and General Manager of Lamb’s Theatre Company (New York). He continues to produce, because being insanely busy is just not enough to keep him out of trouble.

Gaffney currently is a Professor in Media Communication and Screenwriting at Asbury University, as well as Associate Dean of the School of Communication Arts. He received his BFA from Drake University, his MFA from Columbia University, and studied with Act One: Writing for Hollywood.

Of all his job titles, his favorite is “Uncle Funny” to his (over 70) nieces & nephews.
